"short read" (the error Gavin Li got) is due to a read error on the media.
I have seen this many times on my SS2, booting OpenBSD 2.9 as well as 3.0
which is why I always netboot the installer. I am aware of the issues 3.0
has with sun4c (which I found out the hard way and is why I no longer use
it). The instruction I gave apply equally for OpenBSD 2.9
