source tree on 2.9 cd

After upgrading my system to 2.9, I tried copying the source tree iaw 
the instructions, i.e. 
	cd /usr/src
	tar xvf /mnt/src.tar.gz

I get a message that says:
"tar: Cannot identify format. Searching..." 

followed by a bunch of error msgs like 
"tar:Cpio file name length xxxx is out of range", and 
"tar:Cpio file name in header is corrupted"

Anyone know what this is all about?
