Summary: Problems with three different methods of installing OpenBSD
3.0 onto a Macintosh PPC "Wallstreet" Powerbook.
1) CDROM - I started out just trying to boot the CD-ROM via the Open
Firmware, per the instructions. Frustratingly, the WallStreet
doesn't seem to have an OpenFirmware alias or device that is mapped
to the CD-ROM drive. I tried the obvious "boot cd:,ofwboot ..." and
it fails with a "can't OPEN:" error. I then went through the entire
device tree (focusing on the "media-bay" devices) trying to boot from
those. No luck. Apparently one cannot boot from the CD from the
Open Firmware prompt, or if you can, it is non-obvious what the
incantation is. FWIW, I also tried booting everything on the
"devalias" list that looked promising - same error occurs for most
devices ("can't OPEN:")
2) Floppy - So, I formatted a floppy and put ofwboot onto it, and
then tried putting bsd.rd... but they both wouldn't fit. <sigh>
Even trying to just "boot fd:" (without bsd.rd present on the
diskette) leads to an error of "DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FFF00300 at
%SRR0: FF80AD0 %SRR1: 0000B070" which isn't encouraging.
Notes: if I try "boot fd:,ofwboot /bsd.rd" I get a spinning cursor
for a few seconds, ahdn then "can't OPEN: fd:,ofwboot" I have tried
the floppy in both media bays; the left bay seems to be completely
dysfunctional.
3) NetBoot - I created a bootp and tftp server, and tried to get
things to boot from there. It apparently loads ofwboot, but then...
crash. I am able to use tftp to load the bsd.rd and ofwboot files
correctly from a test machine.
Here's the error:
0> boot enet:,ofwboot /bsd.rd file: 10.0.0.1,/tftpboot/ofwbootLoading ELF
DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FFF00300 at %SRR0: FF80AFD0 %SRR1: 00009070
ok
0>
The MD5 checksums on ofwboot and bsd.rd are correct.
This is getting silly; does anyone have prior experience with the
Wallstreet Powerbooks that can give some idea of how to get this
thing working?
