sendmail problem

I've just got the following after rebbooting my machine :

sendmail {8017}: deamon MTA: problem creating SMTP socket
sendmail {8017} : NOQUEUE :SYSERR (root) : opendeamon socket:
Deamon MTA : cannot bind: Address already in use 



with this i can receive rmail however i can't send mail .      

i've got dns working in the local lan however forwarding towards another dns
which contains mail Mail and www records.

any ideas of what might be the problem ?
