I just started using shlight recently, and ran into something very
similar. I left a share mounted via shlight, and found my logins
hanging. Apparently a df in my .login was hanging on the shlight
mount point. Most uncomfortable!!

There is something decidedly not healthy in shlight. In the case
above I did decide to take the drastic option of rebooting. [Insert
Microsoft sarcasm here ...]

This is really annoying. The tar built in to smbclient won't do
compression (or multi-reel), AFAIK, and I was just at the point of
being glad to find a solution that would let me do multi-volume pax
with compression on SMB shares.

The README stuff in the shlight distribution is *not* encouraging
about their own confidence in the code, alas. "The source code of
Sharity-Light is a mess." (This is *not* my flame, this is a direct
quote from their own README!)

Sigh.
