It does give me the same, if I do a a scanbus:

| [10:01:04] root@mad ~ # cdrecord -scanbus
| Cdrecord 1.9 (i386-unknown-openbsd2.7) Copyright (C) 1995-2000 Jörg Schilling
| cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver.
| cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.

But I still can record cd's with cdrecord.
Your dmesg says:

> cd1 at scsibus1 targ 6 lun 0: <HP, CD-Writer+ 9600, 1.0a> SCSI4 5/cdrom removable

So just use cdrecord as follows:

cdrecord dev=/dev/cd1c speed=<put-recording-speed-here> [ further options ]

This should work for you.
