The problem here is that squid's default of using -O2 breaks
under the later GCC/*BSD. The freebsd squid24 port fixes
this, but I really should commit a workaround for gcc/bsd
in squid's configure script.

I would always stick the squid user in an 'ipnat' group and then
grant that group read permissions.
