Heat is a problem for modems especially internal once.

Also the Hayes standard says that a AT command can not come
before the line has been silent for some seconds. To be able to
use Hayes without paying the owners of that Hayes standard some
manufacters removed the demand for silence. There is a nice DoS
floating around that sends +++ATH0 in a ping packet which makes
such modems drop line. Maybe the news posting does the same.
