Yes.  Over time, I upgraded from 2.4 through 2.8, one step at a
time, and I think there was only a single problem with a file having
turned into a directory or some such.

What Theo is saying is that the procedure isn't really supported
and if something doesn't work please don't come crying here.  We
just don't have the time.
