Thanks!  You're the first person _ever_ to answer
on this thread!

Good suggestion... tried by renaming ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc and
/etc/profile to eliminate them from the equation, still the same
"Bad packet length" error as when they were active.

With the exception of /etc/profile (which has a bunch of Solaris
specific stuff in it) there weren't any major scripts happening.
Setting prompt descriptor, paths, etc.
