I assumed that was happening, thanks for confirming.  Any word on this
shipping with 2.8?

USB keyboards do not work on the i386 platform as of yet. The reason
it
works for you before enabling USB is that your BIOS emulates a regular
PS/2 keyboard. As soon as you enable USB, the BIOS notices the OS
touching
the device, and automatically stops the legacy keyboard emulation.
