Kernel compiling hangs the system (2.8)

Hi,

I have OpenBSD installed, to let the computer run as a firewall and
router. As my SMC Ultrachip 83C790 Cards was not recognized by default I
wanted to compile a new custom kernel (also to exclude a lot of things I
do not need i.e. joystick, USB support etc) Now every time I want to
compile the kernel the system completley hangs, the only way is to push
the reset button. I tried both methods compiling with write permission
and without write permission. The first time it hung up at compiling
get.c, now, this time it even hangs up on make depend, at swapgeneric.c.
I was logged in as root.

My hardware:

Cyrix 5x86-100GP
RAM 16MB
Quantum Fireball 1.2 GB IDE
128KB SRAM
Motherboard: 486-PIO-3 manufactured by FIC
BIOS: Award 4.50G
Avance Logic 1MB Graphics Card
4 ISA SMC Ultrachip 83C790 QFP Cards, hard jumpered

Is there any solution?

Regards Carsten
