Re: i386/1403: Intel 440BX2 mobo doesn't power off on halt -p
The following reply was made to PR i386/1403; it has been noted by GNATS.

This is a follow up to my report of September 12th.
I have recently installed a more recent version of the Intel BIOS for
this motherboard. The new version is P13-0014S, as downloaded from
<http://support.micronpc.com/apps/SpecDriv.ASP?HUB=MBD001109-xx&include=>
Even with the new BIOS, this machine will not power down on 'halt -p'
and instead hangs (requiring the power cord to be pulled) after
printing "Attempting to power down..." to the console.
Based on Dimitar Stoikov's comment that his Phoenix BIOS for the same
mobo powered down fine but had APM disabled, I disabled Power
Management in the Intel BIOS setup just to see what would happen.
Interestingly enough, instead of hanging, there is a slight pause
after "Attempting to power down..." and then the message "The
operating system has halted. Please press any key to reboot." is
printed. The machine does not power down.
Therefore, it looks like I've isolated this problem to an adverse
interaction between the apm code in 2.8-current (GENERIC, dated Sept
30) and the Intel BIOS for this mobo.
Please advise on how best to proceed further. I would very much like
it if this could be fixed for 2.8.
