It worked fine. Actually here's the man page for the xe device: --- NAME xe - Ethernet driver for Xircom based 16-bit PCMCIA Ethernet boards SYNOPSIS xe* at pcmcia? DESCRIPTION The xe interface provides access to a 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet network via a Xircom Ethernet card. The Ethernet cards known to be supported by the xe interface are: Xircom Realport Xircom CE3 However, most 16bit Xircom Ethernet cards should work. I am very happy with my new system and the fact that OpenBSD runs well on it. There are a few problems: 1. The pccom2 says irq 5 is already in use by sb0. So I went ahead and removed pccom2 from my kernel configuration file in hope of getting my sound to work. 2. I want to tune up my system's preformance as much as I can, but I don't know much about OpenBSD kernels. My custom kernel wouldn't boot because of pcmcia configuration complaints. Would you please sent me your kernel configuration file and your dmesg? Thank you, P.S. I am including my dmesg + kernel config. Maybe you can figure out what is wrong with my pcmcia settings ... --umlN4RwCT7 Content-Type: application/octet-stream Content-Description: RAMBLO kernel Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="RAMBLOW" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 IyBSQU1CTE8gT3BlbkJTRCAyLjYga2VybmVsIGNvbmZpZwojIDIvMjAvMjAwMCBEbWl0cnkg S2FsYXNobmlrb3YgPGR2a0B0b29sYnVpbGRlcnMuY29tPiAgCiMgVG9zaGliYSBTYXRlbGxp dGUgUHJvIDQ0MCBDRFQgCgptYWNoaW5lICAgICAgICAgaTM4NiAgICAgICAgICAgICMgYXJj aGl0ZWN0dXJlLCB1c2VkIGJ5IGNvbmZpZzsgUkVRVUlSRUQKb3B0aW9uICAgICAgICAgIFRJ TUVaT05FPTAgICAgICAjIHRpbWUgem9uZSB0byBhZGp1c3QgUlRDIHRpbWUgYnkKb3B0aW9u ICAgICAgICAgIERTVD0wICAgICAgICAgICAjIGRheWxpZ2h0IHNhdmluZ3MgdGltZSB1c2Vk IGJ5IFJUQwpvcHRpb24gICAgICAgICAgTlRQICAgICAgICAgICAgICMgaG9va3Mgc3VwcG9y dGluZyB0aGUgTmV0d29yayBUaW1lIFByb3RvY29sCm9wdGlvbiAgICAgICAgICBTV0FQUEFH RVIgICAgICAgIyBwYWdpbmc7IFJFUVVJUkVECm9wdGlvbiAgICAgICAgICBERVZQQUdFUiAg ICAgICAgIyBtbWFwKCkgb2YgZGV2aWNlcwpvcHRpb24gICAgICAgICAgRERCICAgICAgICAg ICAgICMgaW4ta2VybmVsIGRlYnVnZ2VyCm9wdGlvbiAgICAgICAgICBLVFJBQ0UgICAgICAg ICAgIyBzeXN0ZW0gY2FsbCB0cmFjaW5nLCBhIGxhIGt0cmFjZSgxKQoKb3B0aW9uICAgICAg ICAgIFNZU1ZNU0cgICAgICAgICAjIFN5c3RlbSBWLWxpa2UgbWVzc2FnZSBxdWV1ZXMKb3B0 aW9uICAgICAgICAgIFNZU1ZTRU0gICAgICAgICAjIFN5c3RlbSBWLWxpa2Ugc2VtYXBob3Jl cwpvcHRpb24gICAgICAgICAgU1lTVlNITSAgICAgICAgICMgU3lzdGVtIFYtbGlrZSBtZW1v cnkgc2hhcmluZwoKb3B0aW9uICAgICAgICAgIEZGUyAgICAgICAgICAgICAjIFVGUwpvcHRp b24gICAgICAgICAgQ0Q5NjYwICAgICAgICAgICMgSVNPIDk2NjAgKyBSb2NrIFJpZGdlIGZp bGUgc3lzdGVtCm9wdGlvbiAgICAgICAgICBNU0RPU0ZTICAgICAgICAgIyBNUy1ET1MgZmls ZSBzeXN0ZW0Kb3B0aW9uICAgICAgICAgIEZERVNDICAgICAgICAgICAjIC9kZXYvZmQKb3B0 aW9uICAgICAgICAgIEZJRk8gICAgICAgICAgICAjIEZJRk9zOyBSRUNPTU1FTkRFRApvcHRp b24gICAgICAgICAgS0VSTkZTICAgICAgICAgICMgL2tlcm4Kb3B0aW9uICAgICAgICAgIElO RVQgICAgICAgICAgICAjIElQICsgSUNNUCArIFRDUCArIFVEUAoKcHNldWRvLWRldmljZSAg IGxvb3AgICAgMiAgICAgICAjIG5ldHdvcmsgbG9vcGJhY2sKcHNldWRvLWRldmljZSAgIGJw ZmlsdGVyIDggICAgICAjIHBhY2tldCBmaWx0ZXIKcHNldWRvLWRldmljZSAgIHB0eSAgICAg NjQgICAgICAjIHBzZXVkby10ZXJtaW5hbHMKcHNldWRvLWRldmljZSAgIGtzeW1zICAgMSAg ICAgICAjIGtlcm5lbCBzeW1ib2xzIGRldmljZQoKb3B0aW9uICAgICAgICAgIEJPT1RfQ09O RklHICAgICAjIGFkZCBzdXBwb3J0IGZvciBib290IC1jCgpvcHRpb24JCUk1ODZfQ1BVCm9w dGlvbgkJWFNFUlZFUgkJCSMgZGlkZGxlIHdpdGggY29uc29sZSBkcml2ZXIKb3B0aW9uCQlB UEVSVFVSRQkJIyBpbi1rZXJuZWwgYXBlcnR1cmUgZHJpdmVyIGZvciBYRnJlZTg2Cm9wdGlv bgkJQ09NUEFUX0xJTlVYCQkjIGJpbmFyeSBjb21wYXRpYmlsaXR5IHdpdGggTGludXgKb3B0 aW9uCQlGRlNfU09GVFVQREFURVMJCSMgZmZzX3NvZnR1cGRhdGVzKDQpCgptYXh1c2Vycwkz MgkJCSMgZXN0aW1hdGVkIG51bWJlciBvZiB1c2Vycwpjb25maWcJCWJzZCBzd2FwIGdlbmVy aWMKCiMjIERldGVjdGVkIEhhcmR3YXJlICMjCm1haW5idXMwCWF0IHJvb3QKYmlvczAJCWF0 IG1haW5idXMwCmFwbTAJCWF0IGJpb3MwCnBjaTAJCWF0IG1haW5idXMwIGJ1cyAwCnBjaGIw CQlhdCBwY2kwCWRldiAwIGZ1bmN0aW9uIDAKaXNhMAkJYXQgbWFpbmJ1czAKaXNhZG1hMAkJ YXQgaXNhMAp3ZGMwCQlhdCBpc2EwIHBvcnQgMHgxZjAgaXJxIDE0CndkMAkJYXQgd2RjMCBj aGFubmVsIDAgZHJpdmUgMAp3ZGMxCQlhdCBpc2EwIHBvcnQgMHgxNzAgaXJxIDE1CmF0YXBp c2NzaTAgICAgICBhdCB3ZGMxIGNoYW5uZWwgMApzY3NpYnVzMCAgICAgICAgYXQgYXRhcGlz Y3NpMApjZDAgICAgICAgICAgICAgYXQgc2NzaWJ1czAgdGFyZ2V0IDAgbHVuIDAKc2IwCQlh dCBpc2EwIHBvcnQgMHgyMjAgaXJxIDUgZHJxIDEKbWlkaTAJCWF0IHNiMAphdWRpbzAJCWF0 IHNiMApvcGwwCQlhdCBzYjAKbWlkaTEJCWF0IG9wbDAKd3NzMAkJYXQgaXNhMCBwb3J0IDB4 NTMwIGlycSAxMCBkcnEgMAphdWRpbzEJCWF0IHdzczAKcGNwcGkwCQlhdCBpc2EwIHBvcnQg MHg2MQptaWRpMgkJYXQgcGNwcGkwCnN5c2JlZXAwCWF0IHBjcHBpMApscHQwICAgICAgICAg ICAgYXQgaXNhMCBwb3J0IDB4Mzc4IGlycSA3Cm5weDAJCWF0IGlzYTAgcG9ydCAweGYwCnBj Y29tMAkJYXQgaXNhMCBwb3J0IDB4M2Y4IGlycSA0CnBjY29tMQkJYXQgaXNhMCBwb3J0IDB4 MmY4IGlycSAzCnZ0MAkJYXQgaXNhMCBwb3J0IDB4NjAgaXJxIDEKcG1zMAkJYXQgdnQwIGly cSAxMgpmZGMwCQlhdCBpc2EwIHBvcnQgMHgzZjAgaXJxIDYgZHJxIDIKcGNpYzAJCWF0IGlz YTAgcG9ydCAweDNlMCAKcGNtY2lhMAkJYXQgcGNpYzAgY29udHJvbGxlciAwIHNvY2tldCAw IApwY21jaWExCQlhdCBwY2ljMCBjb250cm9sbGVyIDAgc29ja2V0IDEgCm5lMwkJYXQgcGNt Y2lhPwo= --umlN4RwCT7 Content-Type: application/octet-stream Content-Description: dmesg Content-Disposition: attachment; I used the floppy26.fs floppy to boot and ftp install with no problems using this card, but now that the install is done I cannot get the card to work properly. It's detected on bootup as device xe0, but when I try to ifconfig the interface up or use dhclient to get a DHCP address, the link light goes away and I get the same device timeout messages. Since the Xircom support seems to be relatively new (I believe that's what I read in the i386 supported hardware list) it may be that the support is just extremely flaky. I have tried everything from installing a snapshot image to recompiling the kernel and I still cannot get the Xircom card to work. I've attempted to try and figure out where the problem lies, but I'm not much of a C programmer. I'm assuming it's a problem with the kernel driver, but I'm somewhat stumped as to a way of getting the Xircom card working reliably. -- Joseph W. The problem you are having is that the Xircom driver is not able to autodetect the media type. But if you execute: ifconfig xe0 media 10baseT it should start working for you. Unfortunately, I don't remember how the installer floppy works, but I think it provides an option to pass extra parameters when configuing the network. After your install, set up /etc/hostname.xe0 to look like: inet media 10baseT hope this helps, Mike Joseph_Shaw@enron.net wrote: > > I am having similar problems with the Xircom PCMCIA "Creditcard" 10/100 card on > an IBM Thinkpad 600 and on a 600E. It's the new Sony Viao Z505 laptop, out perhaps a week ago. PIII500, 128mb,12 gig hd and very sweet. Of course, I wipped the dreaded W98 os off of it in favor of installing OpenBSD. Happily, everything installed just fine off the CD-Rom drive (I had check this out weeks ago before ordering), and I even just got X working now. The problem: I cannot boot unless I use my 2.6 install cd. It stops on a message "Using disk 0 partition 3"; of course I saw the FAQ info on this, how to boot and use fdisk and installboot to re-install the MBR, but to no avail. I even tried to edit the drive geometry (in the bios and with fdisk), tried to pass the cyl, heads, sectors to fdisk and to installboot, but to no avail again. I'm pretty bummed at this moment. Can someone help me out here? I'm trying *real* hard not to go to Linux-land, as I'd love to put Open on this thing but I'm stuck and confused. I can't believe there isn't a way to do it all w/o using an alternate boot loader as the FAQ suggests. If someone could help me out that would be great! Oh, we (my co-worker and I) just donated a slew of Sparcs to the OpenBSD sparc cause if this gets me brownie points or faster help) ;) thanks, Greg Gallagher ---------- Here's my info: Bios drive parameters: 17475c 15h 63s (~12 gigs) moia# fdisk wd0 Disk: wd0 geometry: 1023/255/63 [16434495 sectors] Offset: 0 Signatures: 0xAA55,0x0 Starting Ending #: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused 1: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused 2: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused *3: A6 0 1 1 - 1022 254 63 [ 63 - 16434432] OpenBSD Dmesg: OpenBSD 2.6 (GENERIC) #696: Tue Nov 2 01:46:05 MST 1999 deraadt@i386.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC cpu0: Intel Pentium Pro ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) 496 MHz cpu0: FPU,V86,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,PAE,MCE,CX8,SYS,MTRR,PGE,MCA,CMOV,PAT,PSE36,MMX,FXSR,SIMD BIOS mem = 652288 conventional, 133103616 extended real mem = 133758976 avail mem = 120569856 using 1658 buffers containing 6791168 bytes of memory mainbus0 (root) bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+(d3) BIOS, date 01/28/00 bios0: diskinfo 0xe055800c cksumlen 1 memmap 0xe05580e8 apminfo 0xe0558194 apm0 at bios0: Power Management spec V1.1 apm0: battery life expectancy 100% apm0: AC on, battery charge high, charging pci0 at mainbus0 bus 0: configuration mode 1 (no bios) pchb0 at pci0 dev 0 function 0 "Intel 82443BX PCI-AGP (PAC)" rev 0x03 ppb0 at pci0 dev 1 function 0 "Intel 82443BX AGP (PAC)" rev 0x03 pci1 at ppb0 bus 1 vendor "Neomagic", unknown product 0x5 (class display, subclass VGA, rev 0x20) at pci1 dev 0 function 0 not configured pcib0 at pci0 dev 7 function 0 "Intel 82371AB PIIX4 ISA" rev 0x02 pciide0 at pci0 dev 7 function 1 "Intel 82371AB IDE (PIIX4)" rev 0x01: DMA, channel 0 wired to compatibility, channel 1 wired to compatibility wd0 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 0: wd0: can use 32-bit, PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2, Ultra-DMA mode 2 wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA, 11513MB, 16383 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 23579136 sectors pciide0: channel 0 interrupting at irq 14 wd0(pciide0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 2 (using DMA data transfers) "Intel 82371AB USB (PIIX4)" rev 0x01 at pci0 dev 7 function 2 not configured "Intel 82371AB Power Management (PIIX4)" rev 0x03 at pci0 dev 7 function 3 not configured vendor "Sony", unknown product 0x8039 (class serial bus, subclass Firewire, rev 0x02) at pci0 dev 8 function 0 not configured vendor "Yamaha", unknown product 0x10 (class multimedia, subclass audio, rev 0x02) at pci0 dev 9 function 0 not configured unknown vendor 0x14f1 product 0x2443 (class communications, subclass miscellaneous, rev 0x01) at pci0 dev 10 function 0 not configured fxp0 at pci0 dev 11 function 0 "Intel 82557" rev 0x08: irq 9, address 08:00:46:08:ee:ce inphy0 at fxp0 phy 1: i82555 10/100 media interface, rev. 4 "Ricoh 5C475 PCI-CardBus" rev 0x80 at pci0 dev 12 function 0 not configured vendor "Sony", unknown product 0x808a (class memory, subclass flash, rev 0x01) at pci0 dev 13 function 0 not configured isa0 at pcib0 isadma0 at isa0 sb0 at isa0 port 0x220/24 irq 5 drq 1: dsp v3.01 midi0 at sb0: audio0 at sb0 opl0 at sb0: model OPL3 midi1 at opl0: pcppi0 at isa0 port 0x61 midi2 at pcppi0: sysbeep0 at pcppi0 lpt0 at isa0 port 0x378/4 irq 7 npx0 at isa0 port 0xf0/16: using exception 16 pccom0 at isa0 port 0x3f8/8 irq 4: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo vt0 at isa0 port 0x60/16 irq 1: generic VGA, 80 col, color, 8 scr, mf2-kbd pms0 at vt0 irq 12 pcic0 at isa0 port 0x3e0/2 iomem 0xd0000/16384 pcic0 controller 0: has socket A only pcmcia0 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 0 wdc2 at pcmcia0 function 0 " , NinjaATA-, V1.0" port 0x180/8,0x386/2 irq 3 atapiscsi0 at wdc2 channel 0 scsibus0 at atapiscsi0: 2 targets wdc_atapi_start: not ready, st = 58 cd0 at scsibus0 targ 0 lun 0: SCSI0 5/cdrom removable cd0: can use 16-bit, PIO mode 4 pcic0: irq 11 biomask 4008 netmask 4208 ttymask 5a8a pctr: 686-class user-level performance counters enabled dkcsum: wd0 matched BIOS disk 80 root on wd0a rootdev=0x0 rrootdev=0x300 rawdev=0x302 From owner-openbsd-mobile-outgoing@monkey.org Sat Feb 26 17:59:13 2000 Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile-outgoing@monkey.org Received: by funky.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 502) id 5B81E151A7; I reinstalled a few machines just this week to overcome the problem (reinstall may've been too drastic but they were new installs anyway and it was easy to get them back to where they were). What I did was choose *not* to use the whole disk for OpenBSD so I could get at the partition editing functions. Disable partition 3 and make partition 0 an A6. Proceed as normal using that partition. Now the booting works. This was on SCSI disks on an adaptec 78xx onboard controller on a server. Alternatively if you're still fighting with booting I'd either a) make a boot floppy with an etc/boot.conf on it that says 'set device hd0a' or get the ranish boot loader from http://come.to/ranish/ which is what i've been using on my laptop for a year or so now. It's light and has some other nice features. You'll have to cut a little partition for it but I wouldn't use any other boot loader (bootmagic, os/2 one, etc, etc) good luck, neal ps - how's the other devices in it (sound, video perf, etc). I'm looking for a new laptop to replace the stinkpad... :) ___________ d neal wise - nwise@spy.net SPY internetworking - will network for food http://www.spy.net On 26 Feb 2000, Greg Gallagher wrote: > The problem: I cannot boot unless I use my 2.6 install cd. If you reinstall on partition 0 or 1, it should work. Of course I could be on the good crack, but that's what I remember from a while ago. Turns out all it needed was a (MS) fdisk /mbr. I'm surprised the FAQ for Open didn't state this and plan on writing them. I'll also throw up a page and send a link once I configure sound, X, kernel, etc. These laptops are cool, but a little slower than I thought, mostly because of disk. I'm looking into it. Also, the dmesg reports the CPU bing a Pentium Pro when it's a PIII 500 (I hope... or else Sony will be hearing from me). I wonder whats up with that, but I'm still looking into it. thank everyone who responded, Greg Gallagher Mark Allen writes: > Greg Gallagher wrote: > > Can someone help me out here?
