Why compress? It's ancient technology and will be vastly outperformed
Yes, gzip or bzip2 compress better, but they also:
* Are a lot slower.
* Use a lot more data memory.
* Require a lot more code.
Also some nasty person has a software patent on compress...
That was over 20 years ago; the patent expired already.
