Insteresting... Try to run 'totem dvd://' to see if it will help. Totem's
menu for run dvd doesn't work very well, so try that command.

That worked!  You know, I have tried for a long time to get Totem to
work, and this is the first positive result I've had.  So Thank You!!

Good, it looks same as with mine. Linux has the same problem, so it's well known issue. The gstreamer still needs a lot of work to get good multimedia. I still hate gstreamer.

If you still have the same problem then I have no clue. I hate when Totem
doesn't give anything useful info in the error message.

Agreed.

Now I had been attempting to start Totem simply by selecting the DVD
("Play Disk" from the Movie menu).  Selecting the DVD location directly
from within the program also works.
